Dire Straits
Brothers in Arms
Brothers in Arms
It was the mid-80's and despite the rise of hair-metal bands and glam rock, Mark Knopler and his comrades in Dire Straights were still rocking their superb 'What if Bob Dylan Could Play Guitar?' pop-rock formula. In 1985 Knopler put down his Fender Stratocaster and picked up a Gibson Les Paul (Something tantamount in the guitar community to switching football teams as an adult) in preparation to record the band's opus 'Brothers in Arms'. The classics are all through it. There's the Gilmour-esque lead lines of the title track. The Springsteen strut of 'So Far Away From Me' and 'Walk of Life'. But the most memorable has to be 'Money for Nothing' - the overheard homophobic ode to MTV that Knopler experienced at a local Whitegoods retailer - resulting in their biggest ever hit and one of the greatest guitar riffs of all time.
